Did you know? More people speak one or more languages in the world compared to just one language. In the 2010 US census, 21% of Americans age 5 year and older spoke a language other than English at home. This series aims to highlight bilingual and multilingual people in our communities.
知ってました？世界では一つ以上の言語を喋れる人のほうが多いのです！アメリカでも２０１０の人口統計データによると五歳以上のアメリカ人で家庭で英語以外の言語を喋る人は全国の人口の２１％いるそうです。このシリーズで色んな形のバリンガル・マルチリンガルを紹介して、どんな形であれ、ポジティブなことであることを伝えたいです。

3. WHAT IS YOUR FIRST LANGUAGE? WHAT IS YOUR SECOND LANGUAGE? AT WHICH TIME DID YOU START SPEAKING YOUR FIRST AND SECOND LANGUAGE?・第１言語は？第2言語は？習った順番は？
My first language was Japanese. Second was English. I was speaking Japanese as a baby and then learned English. I had a jumbled way of speaking both languages at once so my parents had to “restart” how they spoke to me. A doctor appointment when the doctor noticed I didn’t speak proper grammar and instructed my parents to speak separate languages (my dad would mix japanese and English in one sentence). Then again, in preschool, my parents were told I kept mixing the two languages and to make sure I speak one language at a time.
第1言語は日本語でした。第2言語は英語。私はよく第1と第2言語を混ぜて喋ってました。検診の時、お医者さんに英語の言語力が欠けていたと思われ、お医者さんが親に方親は第1言語、片親は第2言語を分けて喋るようにアドバイスされたみたいです。プレスクールに入ったときに、先生たちにも言語を混ぜて使っていたこと指摘され、一つの言語に絞るようにアドバイスされたようです。
4. WHAT LANGUAGES DID YOUR PARENTS/SIBLINGS/FAMILY MEMBERS SPEAK? 親、兄弟、家族はどの言語を話しますか？
My parents spoke in both Japanese and English but, my mother, being full Japanese, spoke more Japanese than English.
親は両方英語と日本語を喋っていました。お母さんは日本人なので、日本語が第1言語でした。
5. DID YOU SPEND TIME IN ANOTHER COUNTRY (SUMMER BREAKS IN JAPAN FOR EXAMPLE)? 違う国で夏休みや定期的に違う国にいきました？
I spent time in Japan the summer of 2011.
2011年の夏は日本で過ごしました。
6. HOW WELL DO YOU SPEAK/UNDERSTAND/READ/WRITE YOUR LANGUAGES? 第1言語、第２言語のスキルレベルは？
I’m definitely more proficient in English but, I am relearning Japanese! I’m getting used to Hiragana but I have trouble speaking in full Japanese sentences. When I formulate sentences in my mind, they make sense and sound great! But, when I try to say them out loud, I get really insecure and I end up sounding foreign. When my mother or Japanese friends talk to me in Japanese I can understand about 80-90% of what they’re saying but I always answer 99% of the time in English
英語のほうが得意です。今は日本語をもっと習おうとしています。ひらがなは上手になっているけど、日本語でちゃんとした文章で話すのはまだ難しいです。頭の中で考えた文章は完ぺきなのに、喋ろうとすると緊張したりして外人のように聞こえてしまいます。お母さんの日本人の友達と話しているとき、日本語で言われたことを８０－９０％は分かるのですが、どうしても英語で９９％返してしまいます。
7. HOW MUCH SCHOOL DID YOU DO? IN WHAT LANGUAGE? DO YOU USE YOUR SECOND/THIRD LANGUAGE AT WORK?学校ではどの言語で習いました？第2、3言語は仕事で使いますか？
My schooling was all in English. I went to community college but didn’t finish. I do not use Japanese at work however, I am exposed to Japanese in my Buddhist community.
学業環境は英語でした。コミュニティ・カレッジに行きましたが、卒業はしませんでした。仕事で日本語は使う機会はありません。でも宗教のコミュニティ（仏法）で日本語は使います。
8. WERE THERE TIMES THAT IT WAS HARD BEING MULTILINGUAL/MULTICULTURAL? マルチリンガルとして育って、大変なことはありますか？
Yes. When I was little i was embarrassed to bring my lunches to school. Kids would make fun of me and ALWAYS ask me, “what’s that?!”. I just wanted to eat!!!! As I got older I learned to appreciate my multicultural life and have had great dialogues with people about it!
はい。小さい頃はお弁当を学校にもっていくのが恥ずかしかった思い出があります。ほかの子供たちにからからかわれたり、興味本位で”それなーに？”とよく聞かれました。ただお昼たべたいだけだったのに！でも大人になったからマルチカルチチャーライフに感謝をしていて、色んな人との会話の種になります。
9. WHAT MESSAGE WOULD YOU HAVE TO YOUR FELLOW BILINGUAL/MULTILINGUAL PEEPS OR PARENTS THAT ARE RAISING BILINGUAL CHILDREN? バイリンガル・マルチリンガルの人たち、またはバイリンガル・マルチリンガル児の親に対してのメッセージはありますか？
My mother tried to teach and make me relearn Japanese in middle school, I didn’t like it. It was boring!!! I would suggest to parents to have fun, hip, multilingual babysitters or friends to come over and incorporate the language! I understand now how important it is to know multiple languages and it IS much harder to learn in your adult years.
中学校に上がった時、お母さんが日本語を教えてくれようとしました。でも、つまらなくて興味を持てませんでした。楽しい、格好いい友達やベビーシッターとかと喋れたりしたらもっと興味を持てたかもしれません。大人になってから言語を習うのが難しいことに気付きました。今は色んな言語を喋れることが大事なことだと分かります。
