Did you know? More people speak one or more languages in the world compared to just one language. In the 2010 US census, 21% of Americans age 5 year and older spoke a language other than English at home. This series aims to highlight bilingual and multilingual people in our communities.
知ってました？世界では一つ以上の言語を喋れる人のほうが多いのです！アメリカでも２０１０の人口統計データによると五歳以上のアメリカ人で家庭で英語以外の言語を喋る人は全国の人口の２１％いるそうです。このシリーズで色んな形のバリンガル・マルチリンガルを紹介して、どんな形であれ、ポジティブなことであることを伝えたいです。

First language: Japanese (since birth)
Second language: English (since kindergarten)

4. WHAT LANGUAGES DID YOUR PARENTS/SIBLINGS/FAMILY MEMBERS SPEAK? 親、兄弟、家族はどの言語を話しますか？
Japanese.

5. DID YOU SPEND TIME IN ANOTHER COUNTRY (SUMMER BREAKS IN JAPAN FOR EXAMPLE)? 違う国で夏休みや定期的に違う国にいきました？
Summer break in Japan (and Saturday school in Japanese)
夏休みは日本で過ごしました。土曜日は日本語学校に通ってました。
6. HOW WELL DO YOU SPEAK/UNDERSTAND/READ/WRITE YOUR LANGUAGES? 第1言語、第２言語のスキルレベルは？
I have no issues communicating online or in person on any level (personal/business)
第1、第2言語どちらも不自由はないです。仕事や日常生活も含めて。オンラインでも、対人でも大丈夫です。
7. HOW MUCH SCHOOL DID YOU DO? IN WHAT LANGUAGE? DO YOU USE YOUR SECOND/THIRD LANGUAGE AT WORK?学校ではどの言語で習いました？第2、3言語は仕事で使いますか？
Preschool ~ University (English)； 1st grade ~ 7th grade (Saturday school in Japanese)；I currently use both English and Japanese at work
プレスクールから大学まで英語；1年生から7年生まで土曜日の日本語学校で日本語を習い；現在仕事では英語と日本語を使います。
8. WERE THERE TIMES THAT IT WAS HARD BEING MULTILINGUAL/MULTICULTURAL? マルチリンガルとして育って、大変なことはありますか？
Yes. When your colleagues at work that only know one language rely on your multilingual abilities to help solve their problems because they cannot do it on their own。
はい。バイリンガル・マルチリンガルの場合、仕事で言語を一つしか使えない同僚によく頼られるので、自分の仕事ではない問題を任されたりして、大変だったりします。
9. WHAT MESSAGE WOULD YOU HAVE TO YOUR FELLOW BILINGUAL/MULTILINGUAL PEEPS OR PARENTS THAT ARE RAISING BILINGUAL CHILDREN? バイリンガル・マルチリンガルの人たち、またはバイリンガル・マルチリンガル児の親に対してのメッセージはありますか？
Regardless of which language I choose to use, there are people that are less proficient than me in each of the languages despite the fact that 1) that is the only language they speak and 2) that is their native tongue
Case in point, whether you are proficient in a language does not depend on how many you are able to speak but how motivated you are in perfecting the ability to use the language as a mode of communication (even if you can only speak one). In fact, I have found that a person that is motivated to excel in their native tongue is more likely to be motivated to perfect other languages. The bottom line is, a language is merely a means to express your thoughts and emotions in a way that another human being that speaks the same language can easily understand, and how well you are able to do that does not depend on the number of languages you are able to speak. Sport is a good example. Athletes that compete on the professional level have most likely picked up and excelled at more than one sport. Often times, they are forced to choose one or the other because they are expected to complete at the professional level. For many of us, language proficiency does not mean we have the ability to pursue a profession in linguistics of that language.
Therefore, I would not discourage any parent or person trying to raise their bilingual children, and as with anything, whether someone excels in a particular field is not determined by the environment they are in, but on the motivation and grit they have to perfect it.
どの言語（英語・日本語）を使っていても、第1言語・母国語しか喋らない人に比べても自分の言語力が上だったりします。第1言語、第2言語の言語力はタダ喋っていてもハイレベルにはならない。「言語力を向上する」というモチベーションが必要なのです。一つの言語をハイレベルまで向上する人は他の言語を習ってもハイレベルでコミュニケーションをできる人が多い。言語は自分の考えや気持ちを他の人に伝える術にすぎないし、多数の言語かじったところで上手くコミュニケーションをとれるわけでもないと思います。スポーツで例えると、トップアスリートの方たちは運動神経が良いため、他の競技も上手だった場合がある。でも、プロとして活動するために自分が一番できる競技を選んだ人も多くないはず。マルチリンガルの人達の場合でも、色んな言語を喋れるからといい、各言語で言語学士レベルになる必要はない。バイリンガル育児をしている人達には言語力に向上に繋がるのは環境ではなく、[言語をハイレベルに扱いたい] という本人のモチベーションと根気強さだと伝えたいです。なので、バイリンガル育児をしたい人達に対して別に批判的な意見はありません。
