Did you know? More people speak one or more languages in the world compared to just one language. In the 2010 US census, 21% of Americans age 5 year and older spoke a language other than English at home. This series aims to highlight bilingual and multilingual people in our communities.
知ってました？世界では一つ以上の言語を喋れる人のほうが多いのです！アメリカでも２０１０の人口統計データによると五歳以上のアメリカ人で家庭で英語以外の言語を喋る人は全国の人口の２１％いるそうです。このシリーズで色んな形のバリンガル・マルチリンガルを紹介して、どんな形であれ、ポジティブなことであることを伝えたいです。

2. WHERE WERE YOU BORN・出身地は？
I was born in Boston, MA.
3. WHAT IS YOUR FIRST LANGUAGE? WHAT IS YOUR SECOND LANGUAGE? AT WHICH TIME DID YOU START SPEAKING YOUR FIRST AND SECOND LANGUAGE?・第１言語は？第2言語は？習った順番は？
My first language is Japanese, my second language is English. My parents were adamant on me being able to speak and understand Japanese so growing up they only spoke to me in Japanese. I had to go to ESL when I started elementary school because I didn’t understand English. By the time I started recognizing “feelings” in my life, I only knew Japanese so I still feel like I can convey or understand myself better in Japanese.
第1言語は日本語です。第2言語は英語です。両親は私が日本語を使えるように、ずっと私に日本語を話していました。就学したとき、英語が喋れない、分からない私はEnglish as a Second Languageクラスに入りました。物心ついた時は日本語を知っていたので、今でも気持ち・感情は日本語を使ったほうが伝えやすかったりします。
4. WHAT LANGUAGES DID YOUR PARENTS/SIBLINGS/FAMILY MEMBERS SPEAK? 親、兄弟、家族はどの言語を話しますか？
My parents speak Japanese as their native language and English fairly well (although with some accent). My sister speaks English much better than Japanese, but we only speak Japanese in our family.
両親は日本語が第1言語ですが、英語もけっこう喋れます（アクセントはあります）。妹は英語のほうが日本語より上手です。家族内では日本語を使います。
5. DID YOU SPEND TIME IN ANOTHER COUNTRY (SUMMER BREAKS IN JAPAN FOR EXAMPLE)? 違う国で夏休みや定期的に違う国にいきました？
Here and there we would go to Japan for the summer, but not too often. My relatives in Japan came to visit us in the US more often. But conversing with my relatives in Japan helped me sustain the desire to keep learning and speaking Japanese.
夏の間、日本に旅行したのは何回かあります。でも、あまり頻繁には行ってませんでした。日本の家族が遊びに来るほうがあります。家族と喋ることで、日本語を習い続ける、使い続けるモチベーションが上がりました。
6. HOW WELL DO YOU SPEAK/UNDERSTAND/READ/WRITE YOUR LANGUAGES? 第1言語、第２言語のスキルレベルは？
I now work for a Japanese company and speak Japanese on a daily basis, so I can definitely write, read, speak and understand Japanese better than I ever had in my life. But English is much easier for me and is the language of preference when conversing.
現在日本の企業に勤めているので、日本語は毎日使います。日本語の言語力は現在が一番長けてると思います。でも、英語のほうが楽なので、お喋りをしたりするのは英語のほうがいいです。
7. HOW MUCH SCHOOL DID YOU DO? IN WHAT LANGUAGE? DO YOU USE YOUR SECOND/THIRD LANGUAGE AT WORK?学校ではどの言語で習いました？第2、3言語は仕事で使いますか？
I went to Japanese Language School from Pre-school to High School on Saturdays, and regular school during the week (spoken in English). I got my Bachelors and Masters in the US. I use Japanese at work.
平日は現地校に行き、土曜日は補習校に行きました。補習校はプレスクールから高校まで行きました。アメリカの大学と大学院を卒業しました。
8. WERE THERE TIMES THAT IT WAS HARD BEING MULTILINGUAL/MULTICULTURAL? マルチリンガルとして育って、大変なことはありますか？
Absolutely. I had an identity crisis in college and really had to overcome the sense of “not belonging anywhere” feeling. Now I realize it doesn’t matter, I embrace every part of the language and cultural experience I had in my life, and I appreciate that it makes me uniquely me.
もちろん。大学の頃に酷いアイデンティティ・クライシスに陥ってしまい、疎外感を克服しなければだめでした。今はどの言語・文化の経験も大事で、自分の個性として受け入れています。
9. WHAT MESSAGE WOULD YOU HAVE TO YOUR FELLOW BILINGUAL/MULTILINGUAL PEEPS OR PARENTS THAT ARE RAISING BILINGUAL CHILDREN? バイリンガル・マルチリンガルの人たち、またはバイリンガル・マルチリンガル児の親に対してのメッセージはありますか？
My parents were so strict in making me go to Japanese school. I hated it so much, I would cry every week because I didn’t understand why I had to go to school on the weekends and go out of my way to immerse myself in a culture that made me feel like an outsider. But looking back, I am so appreciative of my parents for making me learn and speak Japanese, because not only does it make me have an advantage for my work but also I am able to understand and identify with both American and Japanese cultures. I know that my parents also had a really difficult time making me go to Japanese school and keeping the strong determination to not give up, so I feel this was a valuable experience that my entire family went through together and it is something I will always treasure. I am so thankful for my parents.
両親は補習校に関してはとても厳しくて、ものすごく嫌いでした。なぜ週末に学校にいかなければならないのか、なんで疎外感を感じる文化のことを習わなきゃならないのか分からず、毎週泣きました。今は親に感謝しています。仕事でのアドバンテージにもなるし、現在はアメリカと日本の文化を両方受け入れ、理解できます。両親にとっても、私を補習校にいかすのが大変だったと思います。でも、あきらめずに行かせてくれたのは家族との大切な経験だと思います。
