Did you know? More people speak one or more languages in the world compared to just one language. In the 2010 US census, 21% of Americans age 5 year and older spoke a language other than English at home. This series aims to highlight bilingual and multilingual people in our communities.
知ってました？世界では一つ以上の言語を喋れる人のほうが多いのです！アメリカでも２０１０の人口統計データによると五歳以上のアメリカ人で家庭で英語以外の言語を喋る人は全国の人口の２１％いるそうです。このシリーズで色んな形のバリンガル・マルチリンガルを紹介して、どんな形であれ、ポジティブなことであることを伝えたいです。

3. WHAT IS YOUR FIRST LANGUAGE? WHAT IS YOUR SECOND LANGUAGE? AT WHICH TIME DID YOU START SPEAKING YOUR FIRST AND SECOND LANGUAGE?・第１言語は？第2言語は？習った順番は？
My first language is Japanese. My second language is English. I lived with my Japanese immigrant parents who spoke to me in Japanese. Those first words and phrases I learned and spoke as a toddler were Japanese. However, I picked up English quickly, as babysitters spoke English and the preschools I attended were in English. Although I do not remember this, I have been told by my mother that I developed a stutter around that time, but grew out of it shortly after.
(*Note from the SLP. Bilingualism does not cause fluency disorders. According to research, about 8% of children experience disfluent episodes at sometime during their childhood. Most naturally resolve, but out of those 8%, 0.75~1% of children remain with persistent disfluencies/stuttering)
第1言語は日本語です。第2言語は英語です。両親は日本人で、私に日本語を話してくれていました。最初の言葉、文章は日本語でしたが、ベビーシッターとプレスクールは英語だったので、とても早く英語もしゃべり始めました。母親によると、この頃に吃音が少し出ていたみたいですが、すぐ治まったそうです
（＊言語療法士のメモ：バイリンガルリズムは吃音などの原因にはならないです。約８％の子供は吃音症状が出る時期があります。ほとんどの子供は自然治癒しますが、吃音症状が残る子供は８％のうちの0.75%~1%と言われています）
4. WHAT LANGUAGES DID YOUR PARENTS/SIBLINGS/FAMILY MEMBERS SPEAK? 親、兄弟、家族はどの言語を話しますか？
My parents spoke Japanese to me and to each other. I have a younger brother who is also spoken to in Japanese by our parents. So long as older Japanese speaking members of family and friends are around, we speak Japanese. Between my brother and me, ever since I can remember we speak English to each other.
両親は私と弟に日本語を使っていました。目上で日本人の知り合いの周りだと日本語を喋ります。私が覚えている限り、弟とは英語だけで話し合ってました。
5. DID YOU SPEND TIME IN ANOTHER COUNTRY (SUMMER BREAKS IN JAPAN FOR EXAMPLE)? 違う国で夏休みや定期的に違う国にいきました？
Yes, I was fortunate to spend a couple weeks of summer breaks in Japan almost every year. When I was in 3rd grade, I spent a month attending school in Japan. My mother's main objective during our trips to Japan was to spend time with her large family. I did not enjoy those trips because I did not have any friends in Japan and all of my cousins were older and didn't really have time for me. I would just follow my mother around meeting her old friends.
はい。毎年夏休みの数週間は日本で過ごしました。小学３年生の時は特別で、１か月の間日本の小学校に通いました。お母さんは日本に帰国するとき自分の大家族と時間を過ごす事がとても大事だったみたいです。私はあまり日本での時間は好きじゃありませんでした。日本で友達はいなかったし、いとことも年が離れていたので、あまり遊んでくれませんでした。友達に会いに行くお母さんの後をついていった思い出がほとんどです。
6. HOW WELL DO YOU SPEAK/UNDERSTAND/READ/WRITE YOUR LANGUAGES? 第1言語、第２言語のスキルレベルは？
My English is native level proficiency.
My mother made me attend Saturday Japanese school from Kindergarten to 9th grade. Even though I went, I did not study so my grades were bad, especially in kanji. I probably speak and understand conversational Japanese at the level of a middle schooler. Speaking/understanding/reading/writing about politics, law, medical terms, and other niche subjects are difficult for me. However now with technology, I can definitely read and write more than I let on. I might not be able to read or write kanji by hand off the top of my head, but using a computer or phone's Japanese lookup/input, I just need to know how to read it and usually know which kanji to choose when writing.
英語はネイティブレベルです。
幼稚園から中学校３年生まで補習校に通わさせられました。登校したものの、勉強はしなかったので成績は良くなかったです。特に漢字の成績は悪かったです。現在の日本語力は中学校レベルだと思います。専門的な分野の事について話を聞いたり、話をしたり、読んだり、書いたりが難しいです。でも最近はテクノロジーのおかげで、読み・書きはもっとできるようになりました。携帯やパソコンなしで漢字を読んだり、記憶から書いたりすることは出来ませんが、漢字変換機能のおかげで正しい文字を読んで選べるので、随分書けるようになりました。
7. HOW MUCH SCHOOL DID YOU DO? IN WHAT LANGUAGE? DO YOU USE YOUR SECOND/THIRD LANGUAGE AT WORK?学校ではどの言語で習いました？第2、3言語は仕事で使いますか？
I earned my bachelor's in the US.
As mentioned above, my mother made me attend Saturday Japanese school from Kindergarten to Middle school 3rd grade (9th grade). She was adamant to have me complete Japan's required education [義務教育]. My first part-time job as a teenager was at a Japanese bookstore and cafe. I used basic Japanese to tend the register, take orders and serve. I did not do any of the book organizing since I could not read the author's names. Later during my first year of college, a retail store in the mall wanted to hire me because I spoke Japanese. This store claimed they had a lot of Japanese clientele, but once I started those clients were few and far between. I ended up making a career in retail sales and, later, management. I have worked in Atlanta, GA, New York City, NY, and even business trips to Costa Mesa, CA, but my Japanese rarely came in handy.
アメリカの大学を卒業しました。
先程書いたように、補習校は幼稚園から中学校３年生までいきました。お母さんは日本語での義務教育は済ませる事に徹底していました。初めてのバイトは日系の本屋・カフェでした。シンプルな日本語を使ってレジ番、ウェイトスタッフとして働きました。漢字が読めなかったので、本の整理とか出来ませんでした。大学１年目の時モールの中にあったお店でバイトをしていました。そのお店は日本人の客が多いので日本語を喋れる私を雇ったみたいです。しかし、実際働いてみたら日本人の客は少なく、あまり日本語を使いませんでした。その後アパレル業界で働き、常務役もやりました。 Atlanta, GA, New York City, NYで働いた経験もあり、出張でCosta Mesa, CAにも行きました。仕事ではあまり日本語使う機会はありませんでした。
8. WERE THERE TIMES THAT IT WAS HARD BEING MULTILINGUAL/MULTICULTURAL? マルチリンガルとして育って、大変なことはありますか？
The only place I found it difficult was at Japanese school. My family didn't have the resources to allow me to follow the latest Japanese styles and trends, TV, and music that was popular among my classmates. As a result, I had very little in common with them and did not fit in at all.
I have been fortunate to be embraced by my mostly white American community and never felt like an outsider nor have I ever been a target of overt racism. It probably helped that I spoke English well, enjoyed American pop culture, movies, TV, and music. I identified heavily with the American culture.
In Japan, my family and friends understood I come from a different culture. Rather than highlighting the negative aspects and how different I might seem, they very much appreciated that I could speak Japanese well enough, tried my best to assimilate to local living, and ate Japanese food.
補習校は大変でした。クラスメートの間で人気だったファションやトレンド、テレビ番組、音楽が分からなくてクラス内で浮いていました。
白人が多い地域でしたが、アメリカのコミュニティは私を受け入れてくれて、これといった差別も受けずに育ちました。アメリカ文化に馴染み、ポップカルチャー、映画、テレビ番組、音楽などに興味を持ち、英語も上手だったのも理由だと思います。
日本の家族や友達は違う文化で育った私を理解してくれていました。「違い」を指摘しずに、せめて日本語を喋れる事をありがたく思ってくれていました。なので、私も頑張って日本食を食べ、出来るだけ地元に馴染むようにしていました。
9. WHAT MESSAGE WOULD YOU HAVE TO YOUR FELLOW BILINGUAL/MULTILINGUAL PEEPS OR PARENTS THAT ARE RAISING BILINGUAL CHILDREN? バイリンガル・マルチリンガルの人たち、またはバイリンガル・マルチリンガル児の親に対してのメッセージはありますか？
I am raising multilingual children myself. I married a Dominican man whose first and dominant language is Spanish. I had the benefit of being a stay-at-home mother for my daughter and have been speaking to her only in Japanese since her birth. Now she is 6 years old and her Japanese and English are that of a native (reading/writing/speaking/understanding). She does attend Saturday Japanese school. Unfortunately, she never enjoyed Spanish and did not take to picking it up.
My step-daughter speaks native level Spanish and English. She is 16 years old now and has heard me speak and teach my daughter Japanese for almost 7 years. She understands a lot of conversational Japanese. Recently, she has taken an interest in anime and loves to watch it with subtitles and studies reading and writing on her own.
When young minds are receptive, their brains will definitely soak up whatever you can provide whether it be a language or otherwise. If another language is learned joyfully, it can be one wonderful catalyst to learning about other cultures at a deeper level. Perhaps these connections and deeper understandings will make for a more empathetic and peaceful world.
マルチリンガル育児に真っ最中です！ドミニカ生まれで、スペイン語が母国語の男の人と結婚しました。ありがたく私は今専業主婦なので、娘には生まれた時から日本語だけで話しています。現在娘は６歳で英語も日本語もネイティブレベルです（読み、書き、喋り、理解）。補習校にも行っています。残念ながらスペイン語にはあまり興味がなく、習ってくれません。
私には血の繋がっていない娘がもう一人います、その子は英語・スペイン語がネイティブレベルです。彼女は現在１６歳で、私が６歳の娘に日本語を話しかけ、教えているのを７年間目の当たりにしています。なので、日本語での日常会話は理解できます。最近はアニメに興味持ち出し、映画を英語字幕で見始めて、自分で日本語の読み書きの勉強をしています。
若い脳はオープンなので、言語だけでなく与えた事は飲み込みます。言語を楽しく習えれば、他の文化について深く学ぶ素晴らしいチャンスだと思います。このような繋がりと理解がもっと優しい平和な世界を作りあげるかもしれませんね。
